Waterproofing Accessories

Waterproofing system accessories are the supporting components used alongside primary membranes and coatings to complete and detail a structural waterproofing installation. The field sheet membrane does the primary work of excluding water, but the points where a membrane must accommodate a structural condition, a pipe passing through it, a junction between wall and floor, a change of direction, an irregular substrate requiring preparation, are where ancillary products become critical. A membrane that is correctly installed across all field areas but inadequately detailed at junctions and penetrations will fail at those points regardless of the quality of the membrane itself.

Waterproofing Primers

Waterproofing primers are the preparatory layer applied to a substrate before a membrane or waterproofing coating is installed. Their role varies by system. In self-adhesive sheet membrane systems, a primer reduces substrate porosity and improves the adhesion between the membrane's adhesive backing and the substrate surface. In pre-applied systems, the primer conditions the substrate and promotes the bond between the system and the concrete subsequently cast against it. In cementitious coating systems, the primer prevents out-gassing, assists curing and seals the substrate before the main coat is applied.

The primers in this collection are system-specific products for the RIW Sheetseal, RIW Cementseal and Cementflex, and SikaProof pre-applied waterproofing systems. Each is formulated for its own system and is not interchangeable across systems or manufacturers.

Adhesives and Mastics

Structural waterproofing systems use adhesives and mastics at junctions, transitions and detail areas where the primary membrane needs to bond to adjacent materials or where a durable, flexible seal is required. These are not general-purpose products, each is formulated for compatibility with the membrane chemistry it accompanies.

The adhesives and mastics in this collection cover the GCP Bituthene and SikaProof structural waterproofing system ranges. GCP adhesive products are used for bonding and sealing within GCP membrane systems at structural details and penetrations. SikaProof Adhesive-02 is a system-specific adhesive for use within the SikaProof pre-applied waterproofing system. All surfaces must be clean, dry and free from contamination before adhesives are applied.

Pipe Penetration Details and Detailing Strips

Service pipes and other penetrations passing through a waterproofing membrane are among the most common failure points in below-ground and gas-resistant membrane installations. A membrane correctly installed across all field areas but poorly detailed at a pipe penetration will admit water or gas at that point regardless of the surrounding installation. Pre-formed pipe penetration details provide a factory-shaped unit that dresses the membrane around the pipe in a controlled, consistently dimensioned form. Both the Visqueen and RIW pipe penetration units are top-hat profile sections supplied with jubilee clips, designed to provide an airtight and damp proof seal at the pipe-to-membrane junction.

The membrane is dressed up and over the collar, which is then clamped to the pipe with the jubilee clip to complete the seal around the penetration. Detailing strips from Visqueen are used at junctions, abutments and transitions within gas resistant membrane systems, maintaining the continuity of the gas and moisture barrier at changes of direction and structural interfaces where the field membrane alone cannot hold the detail.

Bentonite Detailing Accessories

Within the RIW Structureseal pre-applied waterproofing system, two bentonite-based detailing accessories address voids, irregular substrates and detailing conditions that fall outside the scope of the main sheet membrane. Sealing compound is a trowel-grade sodium bentonite and butyl-rubber material that swells on contact with water to form a tight seal. It bonds to most materials including structural concrete, masonry and metal surfaces, and is used for detailing around penetrations, transitions and irregular substrate surfaces.

Granules are chemically treated sodium bentonite granules that can be applied loose to fill cavities and voids in the substrate, or mixed with water to form a workable paste for forming fillets at internal corners, flashings around drains and service penetrations, and repairing surface defects in concrete substrates. Both products are applied prior to or alongside the main Structureseal installation.

Membrane Fixings and Cleaning Solvents

Retaining discs are mechanical fixings used to secure sheet membranes to the substrate during installation, holding the membrane firmly in position as the system is being built up. RIW Cleaning Solvent is an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent for cleaning brushes, rollers and application equipment after use with RIW resin-based waterproofing products. It can also be used to re-activate cured resin-based coatings prior to overcoating or repair. It must not be used as a thinning agent for any RIW product.
