A waterproofing primer is a preparatory coating applied to a substrate before a waterproofing membrane or system is installed. In structural waterproofing, its role is not to waterproof the surface itself but to prepare it: consolidating and sealing a porous substrate, improving adhesion between the surface and the membrane, and in some systems, preventing out-gassing from concrete or masonry that would otherwise disrupt the bond. Without the correct primer, even a high-quality membrane can fail to achieve full adhesion, leading to delamination or water ingress at vulnerable points. The waterproofing primers stocked here are system-specific products from RIW and GCP, formulated for use with their respective membrane systems in below-ground and ground-level construction. They are not general-purpose surface sealers or decorative undercoats. Each primer is designed to be used as part of a defined waterproofing system on concrete, blockwork, brick, or masonry substrates.
When Do You Need to Prime Before Waterproofing?
Priming is a mandatory step in most post-applied waterproofing membrane systems, and skipping it is one of the most common causes of membrane failure in below-ground applications. Both the RIW Sheetseal 226 self-adhesive bitumen sheet membrane and the GCP Bituthene GP membrane require their respective primers before installation. The same applies to the RIW Cementseal and Cementflex cementitious slurry systems, where the primer is a defined component of the system rather than an optional preparation step. Pre-applied waterproofing membranes are installed before concrete is placed and bond to the structure as the concrete cures, so they do not require a primer in the same way. If you are specifying a post-applied self-adhesive sheet membrane or a cementitious tanking system, the correct primer is not optional.
Bituminous Waterproofing Primers
RIW Sheetseal Primer is a bitumen solution applied to all vertical and inclined surfaces before RIW Sheetseal 226 is installed. It reduces porosity on brick, blockwork, and concrete substrates, improving the adhesion of the self-adhesive membrane backing. It is part of the BBA-certified Sheetseal 226 system, with a coverage rate of approximately 7m² per litre. It is not required on horizontal surfaces and is not suitable for use on insulation boards or ICF. GCP Bituthene Primer B1 is a solvent-based bituminous primer for use with GCP Bituthene GP membrane on dry substrates. It is fast-drying, reaching a tack-free state in approximately 30 minutes at 20°C, making it well suited to programmes where membrane installation needs to follow on the same day. Coverage is 8 to 10m² per litre, available in 5 litre and 25 litre formats. Primer B1 is not suitable for green concrete, wet surfaces, or any substrate that is damp to the touch. The substrate must be confirmed dry before priming begins.
Primers for Cementitious Waterproofing Systems
RIW Cementseal Primer is an acrylic water-based bonding primer for the RIW Cementseal and Cementflex waterproofing systems. It is required on all horizontal applications and porous surfaces before the main waterproofing coat is applied. The primer seals concrete and masonry substrates, prevents out-gassing, and assists the curing of cement-based coatings. Coverage is 5 to 7m² per litre. The primer should be allowed to become transparent before the main coat is applied, which typically takes 30 to 90 minutes. It must be overcoated within 24 hours; if this window is missed it must be mechanically removed before re-application. It is supplied ready to use and must not be diluted.
Applying a Waterproofing Primer
Minimum application temperature across the range is +5°C. Beyond that, substrate requirements and drying times differ by product type and must be followed in line with the relevant manufacturer data sheet. Bituminous primers require a dry, clean substrate. Green concrete, wet surfaces, or any surface damp to the touch must be allowed to dry before priming can begin. Cementseal Primer requires the opposite: the substrate should be thoroughly soaked with clean water until uniformly saturated, with no standing water present, before the primer is applied. Drying times vary by product and site conditions. GCP Bituthene Primer B1 is tack-free in approximately 30 minutes at 20°C, extending in colder temperatures. RIW Sheetseal Primer is touch dry in 2 to 4 hours. RIW Cementseal Primer becomes transparent in 30 to 90 minutes. Priming should be limited to an area that can be covered with the membrane or next system coat on the same day, and any areas that collect dust or dirt after priming must be re-primed before the membrane is applied.
Choosing the Right Waterproofing Primer
The correct primer for any project is determined by the waterproofing system being used. The products in this collection are system-specific, each formulated to work with its corresponding membrane or coating, and are not interchangeable across systems or manufacturers. Substrate condition at the time of application is also a factor: bituminous primers require a confirmed dry substrate, while the acrylic primer for cementitious systems is designed for application to a saturated surface. Using the wrong primer, or skipping the primer stage altogether, compromises the adhesion and integrity of the waterproofing system above it.
