Joints are the most vulnerable points in any concrete structure. Whether it's where one pour meets the next, where sections are designed to move, or where two different materials meet, these are the places water is most likely to get through. Because buildings constantly shift with temperature, settlement and loading, the sealant used has to stay flexible without cracking, splitting or losing its grip. Newton FlexProof 106 X-1C is designed for exactly that.

This is the same high-performance FlexProof 106 X1 compound, supplied in a 290ml cartridge for precise, mess-free application with a standard mastic gun. The thick, thixotropic paste stays in place in vertical joints without slumping and cures into a tough, rubber-like elastomeric seal. It bonds superbly to concrete and most other building materials, including block, screed, metal, plastic, timber and glass, and it stays watertight against water pressure even when the joint moves by up to 20% in expansion and compression and 10% in shear. It resists water pressure from both inside and outside the structure and isn't affected by the high alkalinity of fresh concrete.

The cartridge format is ideal for narrower movement joints of 5–18mm, for detailing around pipes and penetrations, for sealing joints between different materials, and for smaller jobs where opening a full tub isn't practical. There's no mixing or pot life to worry about, a rain-tight skin forms within minutes, and once cured it performs across a temperature range from -40°C to +90°C.

• Best suited to movement joints of 5–18mm wide; for wider joints and larger areas, the 15kg tub is more practical
• In movement joints, insert a foam backing rod roughly 1.5 times the joint width, then fill to a depth of half the joint width
• Approximate coverage per cartridge in movement joints: around 18m of a 5mm joint, 4.7m of a 10mm joint, or 2m of a 15mm joint
• Mask both sides of the joint with tape for a neat finish, and smooth with a soapy wet knife if needed
• Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from dust, laitance, release agents, oils and paint
• Use a suitable primer in movement joints, on porous surfaces, and where resisting water pressure from the inside
• Apply between +1°C and +35°C; do not apply to wet, frozen or icy surfaces
• Cures at roughly 24 hours per mm of depth at 20°C
• Not suitable as a vehicle or pedestrian traffic surface
• Clean tools with a rag before curing; xylene helps remove partly cured product
