Newton FoamStop Backing Rod

Newton FoamStop is a closed-cell foam backing rod used to regulate sealant depth and prevent three-sided adhesion in construction joints. Available in diameters ranging from 10mm up to 75mm, it provides a stable, non-absorbent base that ensures the long-term performance and flexibility of waterproofing membranes.

Description

Newton FoamStop is a range of highly compressible, closed-cell polyethylene foam backing rods designed for use within construction and movement joints. The primary function of the FoamStop is to act as a depth gauge and bond breaker, ensuring that liquid waterproofing membranes like Newton FlexProof 106 are applied at the correct design thickness. Because it is closed-cell, it does not absorb water and provides a stable, non-adherent base that prevents "three-sided adhesion," allowing the sealant above to expand and contract freely with the building’s movement.

Benefits

  • Ensures precise depth control for liquid-applied joint sealants
  • Acts as a bond breaker to allow for maximum membrane elasticity
  • Highly compressible and flexible, easily conforming to irregular joint widths
  • Closed-cell structure prevents moisture absorption and air bubbling in the sealant
  • Chemically inert and compatible with cold-applied sealants and membranes

Good to know

  • Available in 10mm, 15mm, 20mm, 25mm, 30mm, 40mm, 50mm, and 75mm diameters
  • Supplied in 1m lengths (standard for easy handling and installation)
  • The diameter of the FoamStop selected should be approximately 150% of the width of the joint (e.g., use a 15mm rod for a 10mm joint)
  • Can be inserted using a blunt tool to avoid piercing the cells; ends should be butted tightly together without the need for adhesive
