SikaSeal 414 Backer Rod

SikaSeal 414 Backer Rod is a grey, closed cell polyethylene foam rod used to fill and control the depth of sealant joints prior to applying sealant. Correct joint depth is critical for sealant performance, the backer rod ensures the sealant is applied at the correct depth-to-width ratio (typically 2:1), preventing the 3-sided adhesion that would restrict the sealant's ability to accommodate joint movement and lead to premature failure. Compatible with all known sealant types including silicone and polyurethane. Available in a range of diameters from 10mm to 30mm to suit different joint widths.

Good to know

• Select a backer rod diameter slightly larger than the joint width so it is compressed slightly on installation, this ensures a tight friction fit
  
• Install backer rod before applying sealant, do not apply sealant over an open joint without backer rod on joints deeper than 10mm
  
• Joint depth should be 50% of joint width (minimum 5mm depth)
  
• For Sikasil 825: maximum joint depth = joint width ÷ 2, minimum 5mm
